New
Old World

Australia may be considered a new world by some, but it is also a very old one. Sydney is a young city embedded within the world’s oldest continuous culture. A complex and exciting contemporary society, Sydney is one of the great cities of the world and we are thrilled to be hosting AGI Congress and Open in 2020.

Indigenous Australians have inhabited the Sydney area for at least 60,000 years. The original Aboriginal inhabitants of the inner-city area are the Gadigal people. There are about 29 clan groups of the greater Sydney area referred to collectively as the Eora Nation—Eora meaning simply ‘the people’ derived from Ee (yes) and ora (this place).

Sydney is the most populous city in Oceania and home to the third largest foreign born population of any city in the world. More than 250 different languages are spoken in Sydney and about 35% of Sydney residents speak a language other than English at home.

Beyond the stunning Sydney Harbour—home to dual icons the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House—the city boasts some of the world's most beautiful beaches, along with well appointed museums, gorgeous botanic gardens, award-winning restaurants, lively neighbourhoods and countless landmarks of Sydney’s rich cultural history.

We invite you to Sydney in 2020 to join us for the AGI Congress and AGI Open. We are organising a two-day Open, followed by a traditional four-day Congress that will feature cultural experiences, great food, excursions, studio visits and loads of fun times. For many of you Sydney is a long trip, so we advise that you get organised and plan as early as you can. We have put together a brief schedule and a set of accommodation options so you can plan your stay right away.
